Verna

Description

Spanish variety of unknown origin.

Large tree with fewer thorns than the Fino lemon tree.
Re-flowering with medium to low pollen viability. Self-compatible variety.

Large fruit weighing around 130 grams. Elongated. Shoot at the base and elongated nipple at the apex. Outside is vivid yellow in colour. Few seeds. Thick rind which make it travel well.

Harvest in second and third seasons (February-June). May produce another harvest in summer known as “rodrejos” (late fruits) of high commercial interest.

Two clones of the variety are currently being multiplied in nurseries: Verna 51 and Verna 62, although differences are minimal.

Slight tendency towards alternate harvests. Bulges appear if grafted onto a bitter orange. Fruit-drop is lower than that of the Fino and Eureka varieties. The variety is more susceptible to the effects of Prays citri.
